The league was founded by the American professional lacrosse player Paul Rabil and his brother Mike Rabil. The league gives college graduates the opportunity to continue their lacrosse careers after graduation while spreading popularity for the sport across the country.

The Waterdogs come into Sunday's championship game with a record of 7-3 this season. In the semifinals, the team played to a big 17-6 victory over the Cannons.
